Case Study: Hybrid Energy Storage Supporting Construction Works at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
Project Overview
As one of Europe's busiest transportation hubs, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is continuously investing in infrastructure improvements to support future growth and operational efficiency. Construction activities in such environments require dependable power solutions that can be deployed quickly, operate reliably, and minimize disruption to surrounding operations.
To meet these requirements, a mobile hybrid energy storage system was deployed on-site to provide flexible power for construction activities while improving overall energy efficiency compared to conventional generator-only solutions.

The Challenge
Construction projects around airports often face several power-related challenges:
- Temporary work areas with limited grid access
- Fluctuating power demand throughout the day
- Requirements to reduce fuel consumption and operating costs
- Noise restrictions in sensitive environments
- Increasing pressure to lower emissions and improve sustainability performance
Traditional diesel generators are typically sized for peak loads but spend much of their operating time running at low efficiency, resulting in unnecessary fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
The Solution
The project utilized a mobile hybrid energy storage system integrating lithium battery storage with an onboard diesel generator.
The system continuously monitors site power demand and automatically manages energy flow between the battery and generator. During periods of low or variable load, stored battery energy supplies the required power. When additional capacity is needed, the integrated generator automatically provides support and recharges the battery system.
This hybrid operating strategy allows the generator to run more efficiently while reducing idle hours and fuel waste.
